Hamby Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is Albany's premier Martial Arts facility specializing in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Self Defense, and Submission Grappling for adults and children.

BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU

BJJ (AKA smooth art, gentle science) is a complete system of self defense that focuses on grappling, strikes, and clinch work, in which the practitioner's use of body mechanics and leverage allows the execution of techniques such as chokes and holds to subdue an opponent and force them to give up

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF PRACTICING BJJ?

The BJJ practitioner has a significant advantage over an opponent, having studied the principles and techniques of Jiu-Jitsu, being more knowledgeable and therefore more prepared to react in a realistic altercation regardless of size, strength, or physical superiority of an opponent/aggressor. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu allows the practitioner to control, dominate and win a fight with minimum violence, even while grounded underneath an opponent. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu allows practitioners to train as intensely as they like, as regularly as they like, with little to no risk of injury. Thus, making BJJ the perfect grappling discipline for competitive and recreational practitioners alike, as well as those interested in learning Self Defense, or those who simply want to train for fun.

WHY GRAPPLING? WHAT ABOUT PUNCHING AND KICKING?

In the earliest Mixed Martial Arts competitions it was generally expected that the well known traditional martial arts which focused heavily on punching and kicking would prevail. Much to the surprise of spectators it was discovered that most of the bouts were won by disciplines that placed a huge emphasis on grappling. Disciplines such as Wrestling, Judo, Sambo, and especially Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, dominated over the traditional striking styles. These early style vs. style MMA competitions had no time limits, no weight divisions, and a victor was only declared if their opponent gave up or was rendered unconscious. Due to the brutal nature of the these early competitions, the world at large was able to witness what the realistic nature of a fight looked like for the first time. From the lack of rules in these early competitions it is inferred that this is the closest resemblance of what a real life altercation would look like when there are no given parameters or rules to abide by. Fights are unpredictable and do not look like what traditional striking based martial arts, which focus on choreographed sequences of flashy acrobatic moves, have portrayed in mainstream media such as films and television. Therefore, regarding Self Defense, most traditional styles of martial arts have been deemed inadequate in terms of preparing an individual to properly defend themselves in a real life altercation. FACT! MOST FIGHTS END UP ON THE GROUND BY DESIGN OR ACCIDENT! Through early competitions of this nature the value of grappling and BJJ was made evident. Today all successful high level MMA competitors and Martial Artists have advanced knowledge of grappling focused disciplines including Wrestling, Judo, Sambo, and especially Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu!

At Hamby Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, we understand the value of cross training in various disciplines focused on striking as well as grappling in preparation for Self Defense and modern MMA competition. At HBJJ nobody is expected to compete in BJJ or MMA competitions.

 HOWEVER,

We DO address the fundamentals of striking as they pertain to Self Defense. Jiu-Jitsu is a complete Martial Art focusing on all aspects of fighting and self defense including grappling, striking, and clinch work.
